Primary Medical Care (PMC) is the first level of healthcare focused on preventing, diagnosing, and timely treating the most common medical conditions through a General Practitioner. Under the MediSmart Essential Plan, Primary Medical Care includes medical consultations based on established care protocols, which may include medications, laboratory tests, and X-rays according to medical criteria, with the purpose of providing comprehensive, accessible, and timely care to relieve common illnesses or medical conditions. Additionally, the general practitioner may evaluate other symptoms or conditions and determine the necessary treatment or diagnostic tests depending on each case.
Yes. The plan includes unlimited telemedicine appointments at no additional cost, allowing you to receive virtual medical care without needing to travel.
The Essential Plan includes 3 specialist visits per year in total, specifically in Pediatrics, Gynecology, Dentistry, and Psychology. If you need care from another type of specialist or additional consultations, the general practitioner will assess your case and guide you on the available options. The Essential Plan can be used at Hospital Metropolitano locations and Metropolitano Medical Centers, excluding Hospital Metropolitano Lindora, San José, and Plaza del Sol. Available locations include: Hospital Metropolitano: Lincoln Plaza – Liberia – Huacas – Quepos – San Carlos. Metropolitano Medical Centers: Escazú – LHS Belén – Cariari C3, as well as Clínica Santa Catalina. For specialist consultations included in the Plan, the entire MediSmart Network and its respective locations are available.
Appointments must be scheduled in advance through MediSmart service channels or directly with Hospital Metropolitano. Medical service hours are Monday to Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. In case of an emergency, members may go directly to the medical center, where they will be attended according to availability and the center’s operating hours. Yes. You can add up to 7 beneficiaries to your plan, and there is no requirement for a family relationship between the primary plan holder and the beneficiaries. The cost per beneficiary is $4.52 per month, or $3.39 per month if they are already enrolled in the MediSmart Standard Plan.

The Essential Plan has a monthly fee of $5.65 IVI for the primary member and $4.52 IVI for each beneficiary. Prices may vary depending on promotions or plan conditions and are subject to the corresponding tax. If the person is already a MediSmart member, the cost is $4.52 for the primary member and $3.39 for each beneficiary. Upon enrollment, a virtual membership card will be charged at a cost of $1.13. This charge is made only once. If the person is already a MediSmart member, they will not have to pay the card fee.
